The 49ers offense got off to a very solid start on offense in the first quarter, putting two touchdowns on the field behind a nice mix of passing and rushing. The first touchdown came following an 80 yard drive that was pretty close to perfect. Alex Smith made some solid short and mid-range throws and Kendall Hunter absolutely owned the Chargers defense. Anthony Dixon capped it off with a 1-yard touchdown run.
The 49ers defense got a big turnover on the subsequent Chargers drive as NaVorro Bowman sacked Billy Volek, forced a fumble and then recovered his own fumble. The Chargers benched several significant offensive starters, but a strong performance is nice for momentum. The 49ers got the ball back at the Chargers 22 and seven players later they capped a drive with a 1-yard Anthony Dixon touchdown run.
It's only preseason, but I like the solid start.
