49ers vs. Eagles: Donte Whitner Highly Questionable For Sunday

We'll have the offensive and defensive coordinator transcripts a little later this afternoon, but in the meantime a few comments have come out on Twitter via the beat writers. A particularly pertinent comment was that Vic Fangio considers Donte Whitner highly questionable for Sunday's 49ers-Eagles game. Whitner was unable to complete practice on Wednesday, which gives us a bit more insight into Wednesday's practice participation report in which Whitner was listed as limited.

Whitner left last week's game against the Bengals fairly early with a hip injury sustained while breaking up a play in the end zone. He was replaced by Madieu Williams on first and second down and Reggie Smith on third down. Smith also mixed in on some other nickel situations on first and second down, including every down of the final two series (only five downs, but still).

Williams and Smith had a great deal of success last Sunday operating as a sort of strong safety by committee. Andy Dalton is no Michael Vick, but given his early success and the 49ers secondary struggles the first two weeks, I'd say it was a positive sign. There's no word on who would fill in for Whitner if he can't play, but I've got to think they stick with that committee of Smith and Williams.
