In a bit of an upset, 49ers QB Alex Smith was able to secure the FedEx Air Player of the Week. The award is entirely a popularity contest, but that might make it all the more of an upset. Smith was squaring off against Drew Brees and Andrew Luck, and you could make an argument for either of the other two.
Smith put together arguably his best performance as a pro last Sunday as he completed 18 of 24 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns, while also adding a career-high 49 rushing yards. It was part of a record-setting performance that saw the 49ers set a franchise record for total yards, while becoming the first NFL team to rush for 300+ yards and pass for 300+ yards in the same game.
Drew Brees completed 29 of 45 for 370 yards and four touchdowns in the Saints' comeback victory against the San Diego Chargers. Andrew Luck completed 31 of 55 passes for 362 yards and two touchdowns in the Colts big upset of the Packers. You could make arguments for all of these guys, but 49ers fans came out in force to get the vote in.
Ahmad Bradshaw claimed the Ground Player of the Week award, although I think it would have been entirely fair to give the award to the 49ers entire ground game. They thoroughly dominated in rushing for 311 yards between their running backs, fullback, two quarterbacks and even a reverse mixed in. I'd say that's a nice little day.
