49ers vs. Giants: Third quarter open thread

We break down the first half and provide an open thread for the third quarter

Ed Mulholland-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Well, that certainly wasn't a good half of football. The 49ers head into the third quarter trailing 10-3, after leaving quite a few points on the field in the first half. The half ended with a missed 52-yard field goal as David Akers is struggling today. The field goal came after a crazy turn of events late in the half. The Giants drove deep into 49ers territory, but a Lawrence Tynes field goal was blocked by Tarell Brown. Jim Harbaugh brought in Colin Kaepernick, who completed a 36-yard pass to Mario Manningham. Unfortunately Akers could not convert and the lead remains seven.

The 49ers have been up and down thus far, with the down having a much bigger impact than the up. The team seemed to dominate in the first quarter, controlling time of possession and moving up and down the field. Unfortunately, the 49ers offense slowed down inside Giants territory. David Akers attempted two field goals in that first quarter, missing one and making one. Alex Smith threw his second interception of the season, which the Giants turned into a touchdown on a six-yard pass from Eli Manning to Victor Cruz.

It is safe to say the 49ers need to make some halftime adjustments. Eli Manning is picking apart the 49ers secondary, with Chris Culliver in particular having a tough game. Victor Cruz has the touchdown, but Domenik Hixon is the one having a big day with four catches for 78 yards. We'll see how Vic Fangio adjusts in the second half.
