NFL power rankings, Week 7: 49ers take a dip

The NFL wrapped up Week 6, which means it is time for more power rankings. We break down the 49ers current standing with the media.

We're back for another week of NFL power rankings assessment. As would be expected following the 49ers disheartening loss to the New York Giants, the power rankings took a dip. I'm still waiting on ESPN.com's rankings, but in the rest of the rankings the 49ers have dropped to either No. 6 or No. 7, with the Falcons claiming the overall top spot across the board. Fooch's Note: I've added ESPN and they are the only one with the 49ers higher, at No. 5.

The NFL.com overall rankings include 13 different votes creating an overall ranking. It is interesting to note that the Giants got two first place votes over the undefeated Atlanta Falcons. Given the big win for the Giants and their status as defending Super Bowl champions, does that officially make them "the team to beat" at this point? The Giants have shown they can still be inconsistent at times, but they are the defending champs and they are finding ways to win. Does that make them the team to beat?

Moving forward, Week 7 brings some tough matchups across the board. The Falcons are on bye so they will likely remain at the top of most lists. The Giants host the Redskins in an always tough NFC East matchup. The Texans host the Ravens in a matchup of the two clear-cut best teams in the AFC. The Packers travel to face a Rams squad that has been consistently tough at home. The Bears host the Lions at home in an NFC North battle. And of course the 49ers will do battle with their NFC West rivals, the Seattle Seahawks. We could have some solid shake-up in the rankings by next Tuesday.
