49ers home games: What to do in San Francisco before and after the game

We put together a community produced break-down of what to do in San Francisco when in town for a 49ers game

Fooch's Note: With the 49ers getting ready for their first playoff game in the 2013 NFL playoffs, I thought I'd bump this back up to the top of the page. It's been in the river for a few months, but want to get it a bit more prominent.

Over the last few weeks, I've noticed more and more FanPosts from people that are in town for a 49ers game and are looking for things to do, places to go and otherwise ways to occupy their time. San Francisco is a great city to visit and has an endless array of things to keep visitors occupied.

Google provides plenty of information when you search for San Francisco, but given the great community we have here, I thought a community developed guide would be a lot more valuable to users. We have people who live in San Francisco and surrounding cities who know the region like the back of their hand. More importantly, we also have people who fly in for games on occasion and have their favorite places in the city. That kind of first-hand information fro 49ers fans strikes me as more valuable than what some random dude on Yelp has to say.

For this first post, I'd like people to post anything and everything they like to do in San Francisco both as just basic tourist stuff, and also game-day stuff. If you know of a particularly great tailgate that welcomes people every week, post that. If you know of a good bar to pre-game at before heading to the game, post that. If you like visiting a certain site in the city when you're in town, post that. This is just meant to be an all-encompassing guide to fun things in San Francisco.

If you get a minute to write something, please first check the comments to see if somebody mentioned what you are going to mention. If it has been mentioned, reply to their comment with any thoughts rather than posting a new thread of comments. My plan is to take what people post in the comments and turn it into a new article that people can bookmark and I can update with any new suggestions. Given the ability to pin stuff into the cover of the site, I can then post this in the cover every week leading up to games for people visiting from out of town.

I'll get this started with a couple things I like. First off, a couple bars I enjoyed frequenting when I lived in San Francisco. McTeague's Saloon on Polk between Bush and Sutter was a couple blocks from my apartment, so it was my go-to place. If you're looking for near Union Square, I'm a fan of Lefty O'Douls on Geary between Powell and Mason. It's right near Union Square. If you are planning on catching the 77X bus down Van Ness to the game, hit up Tommy's Joynt on Van Ness and Geary.

Speaking of public transportation to the game, the San Francisco Metro website provides 49ers-specific details that are very helpful. I am a fan of taking the T-Third line from Market down to the Gilman-Paul station and then hopping on the 87. I've noticed it can be a bit less packed. However, if you are near Van Ness, the 77X is pretty money.
