Matt Maiocco is reporting that the 49ers have decided to waive outside linebacker Eric Bakhtiari. The 49ers signed Bakhtiari to replace Clark Haggans, who was suspended for three games by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Haggans suspension ended with this last game, and the 49ers had to make a roster decision by 1pm PT on Tuesday.
It's a bit of an interesting decision given the playing time Bakhtiari saw in place of Haggans. While Clark Haggans was active in the first two games, he did not play. On the other hand, in three games with the 49ers, Bakhtiari finished with six, 15 and 19 snaps. He focused on special teams, but the last two weeks he got some defensive snaps in garbage time.
If this move does go official tomorrow, I can only assume the coaches did not see enough from Bakhtiari in his limited OLB work to think he could contribute enough as a regular if Ahmad Brooks or Aldon Smith went down. Furthermore, it would seem like they are not quite enticed enough by his special teams skills to keep him on the roster. Any other ideas?
