The San Francisco 49ers put together a record-setting performance in their win over the Buffalo Bills, setting the franchise record for total yards of offense. The overall balance was incredible as the 49ers had 310 passing yards and 311 rushing yards, a first in NFL history.

Alex Smith put together what was probably the best performance of his career from a pure statistics perspective. He completed 18 of 24 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns, while adding in a career-high 49 rushing yards. This performance has earned Smith a nomination for FedEx Air Player of the Week.

Smith faces stiff competition with Drew Brees and Andrew Luck up for the award as well. Brees threw for 370 yards and four touchdowns in a comeback win over the San Diego Chargers. Luck threw for 362 yards and two touchdowns in guiding the Colts to a huge comeback win over the Green Bay Packers.

I would imagine Brees or Luck is likely to win this award, but let's give Alex Smith a fighting chance and drop in some votes for his performance. I thought Smith had been nominated for the award before, but I did a search of my email for the FedEx press releases and am not seeing anything. Whatever the case, head over and vote for Alex Smith for FedEx Air Player of the Week. It may be some random award, but it can be OUR random award!
