NFL power rankings, Week 11: People don't seem to be talking about the lack of a divisional win

We break down Week 11 NFL power rankings following the 49ers tie with the Rams.

Brian Bahr

The wrap of Monday Night Football last night means the return of power rankings for Week 11. I think the tie confused some of the pollsters because we had two polls drop the 49ers to No. 8, two keep them the same at No. 4 and one actually move them up to No. 3.

I'm a bit surprised they didn't drop a bit in these other rankings, given that it was the Rams at home. The tie in a general sense doesn't bother me, but it was a divisional game at home. If a divisional win counts like a win and a half or even two wins, what exactly is a tie? Half a win? No win? While I do view a tie as better than a loss generally, a divisional tie would have to be closer to a division loss than a division win. The 49ers can gain back the needed half game on Seattle with a win over Chicago, but a loss drops the 49ers only a half game up on Seattle. With a game still to play up in Seattle, that makes things a whole lot more interesting.

The Bears were given a relative reprieve in the rankings in spite of their Week 10 loss. They did lose to a very strong Texans squad that is now at the top of the rankings, so I suppose that counts as a bit of a moral victory for them. Either way, the 49ers will have a chance to make a move in these rankings when they host the Bears next week.
