Alex Smith declared out for Monday Night Football

We break down the news that Alex Smith will not play in Monday Night Football.

Fooch's Note: The 49ers made it official, declaring Smith out for MNF.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that Alex Smith will NOT play in Monday Night Football against the Chicago Bears. According to Mortensen, Smith was not able to get final clearance from a neurologist, so he will sit and Colin Kaepernick will get his first career start.

Earlier today, Pro Football Talk was reporting Smith was expected to start, pending a final concussion test. If this new information from Mort is correct, Smith did not pass that test. The 49ers will release their inactive list 90 minutes before the game, so we'll know finally and for sure at that point. If Smith is inactive, that would mean Scott Tolzien will be active and backing up Colin Kaepernick. Kyle Williams is the emergency quarterback behind those two.

This now means we have a matchup of Colin Kaepernick and Jason Campbell. I would not be surprised if this game was taken off the board at sports books, but if you can get a wager in, I'd recommend taking the under. I suppose it's hard to prepare for new quarterbacks in the space of a week, but with these two defenses, this will be an interesting one.
