While we wait for the 49ers to get going on Sunday, we get a day of college football in the meantime. Friday saw five ranked teams play, but Saturday provides some more enticing matchups. It is rivalry week, which means we have some cutthroat games.
The big one would have to be newly minted No. 1 Notre Dame traveling to LA to face Southern Cal. While Notre Dame is surging, USC has struggled along. They will go to a bowl game, but a variety of issues have kept them from developing quite like they might have hoped.
The other two big rivalry matchups would have to be No. 4 Florida at No. 10 Florida State and No. 5 Oregon at No. 15 Oregon State. Notre Dame-Alabama seems like the likely national championship game, but there is enough football left for an upset or two the rest of the way.
As we head into these rivalry games, the college football season is fast coming to an end. That means bowl season is just around the corner, which means all star games are not far behind, and the draft season will be upon us. In the meantime, we've got another 2013 mock draft for you from Matthew Fairburn over at Mocking the Draft. Matthew has the 49ers grabbing Rutgers cornerback Logan Ryan:
What do you give a team that has it all? The longterm future at quarterback is still up in the air, but between Colin Kaepernick and Alex Smith, the 49ers seem unlikely to draft a signal caller in the first round. They could certainly trade this pick to a team that wants Tyler Wilson, Mike Glennon or one of the juniors that declares.
Cornerback is one area the 49ers could use a little bit of help. Logan Ryan is having a tremendous season at Rutgers and could move towards the first round.
With Chris Culliver and Tarell Brown looking sharp, is cornerback where the 49ers go first? Carlos Rogers signed his big extension, but I can't imagine he survives the length of the deal. Part of the difficulty in projecting the 49ers draft possibilities is that the team's depth leaves them potentially red-shirting some talent like we saw this year. Additionally, I have to think this team either moves up somewhere or trades some 2013 picks for future picks.
Trent Baalke has proven he is down for some wheeling and dealing, so the history is there for some dealing. Additionally, while the 49ers will have some holes opening up on the roster, but enough for 13 draft picks? I don't know how the dealing will go, but you know we'll see it.
