A day after Adam Caplan reported the 49ers would be signing former Eagles WR/returner Chad Hall, Matt Maiocco and Matt Barrows are both reporting the move would be to add Hall to the practice squad. The 49ers practice squad is currently filled up with eight players, so one of them would either be released from the squad, or signed to the 53-man roster to fill Kyle Williams roster spot. Williams announced to the world that he tore his ACL, which would mean he will eventually move on to the injured reserve list, opening up a roster spot.
The 49ers practice squad currently includes second year wide receiver Ricardo Lockette. He initially joined the 49ers on approximately September 24, and has been on the practice squad ever since. The 49ers likely will activate A.J. Jenkins for Williams spot on the 46-man active roster, but it would not be surprising to see Lockette added to the 53-man roster.
Hall is a guy who has speed and has done some work as a return man. Coach Harbaugh has said Ted Ginn Jr. injured his wrist prior to his fumble on Sunday. If that is the case, it makes sense to have another option handy just in case. It remains to be seen if LaMichael James will get work in the return game.
