Fooch's Update: Matt Barrows is reporting that Kendall Hunter suffered an Achilles tear.
Fooch's Note: Site decorum is off for this thread
Well, when it rains it pours. A day after learning that Kyle Williams had torn his ACL and was done for the year, more bad news could be coming out. USA Today's Mike Garafalo is reporting that the ankle injury Kendall Hunter suffered against the Saints may be worse than expected. Garafalo is reporting the 49ers running back could be done for the year. Matt Barrows also reported that multiple sources were confirming that information.
This is kind of crazy because both Williams and Hunter were injured on the same play, and subsequently taken back to the locker room on the same cart. You really don't see two guys on a cart like that. The play came on a rushing attempt by Hunter in which his ankle appeared to be tweaked by Jonathan Vilma at the end. Williams' injury appeared to be a "non-contact" injury, as he basically went down and reached for his knee after planting his foot wrong.
While no injury is a good injury, it does come at an appropriate time. The 49ers have until the end of the week to decide whether to activate Jewel Hampton from the non-football injury list. They have the opportunity to move him to the 53-man roster to replace Hunter if he were to go on injured reserve. If added to the 53-man roster, I suspect he would spend a decent amount of the remainder of the season inactive while Brandon Jacobs and LaMichael James get their chances, but you never know.
In case you are wondering who Jewel Hampton is, Tre9er put together some thoughts on him shortly after the 49ers signed the undrafted free agent. I added some thoughts a few days later, including some college video.
