The San Francisco 49ers released some roster information today that does not yet impact the 53-man roster, but is still worth noting. According to the 49ers, outside linebacker Darius Fleming will remain on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, and running back Jewel Hampton will return to practice but remain on the reserve/non-football injury list for now.
Fleming tore his ACL during rookie minicamp earlier this summer, and according to Matt Maiocco, he should be good to go for next year's offseason program. Fleming was brought in to provide some competition for depth at outside linebacker, and will get plenty of opportunities once he is 100%. The 49ers decided to go with Clark Haggans as their primary backup outside linebacker this year.
The 49ers signed Jewel Hampton as an undrafted free agent and he is a guy who could bring some intriguing competition to the running back position. He is a very talented running back, but dealt with ACL tears of both knees in 2009 and 2010. He was placed on the NFI list after offseason surgery on bone spurs in his left foot. According to Maiocco, the 49ers have a three week window to activate him, or he will finish the season on the NFI list. Given that Brandon Jacobs and LaMichael James are both inactive each week, it is hard to see the team activating Hampton this season.
