NFL Free Agents 2012: C.J. Spillman Signs Three Year Contract Extension, According To Reports

Fooch's Update: Spillman's agent said the first year of the deal is $1.8M. No word on how bonuses or anything work into the $6M figure.

Matt Maiocco just tweeted that 49ers restricted free agent C.J. Spillman has come to terms on a three year contract worth $6 million. Spillman was restricted, which meant he could solicit offers on the open market, but the 49ers would have a right to match those offers.

Spillman spent most of the 2011 season as a key member of the special teams coverage units. He also was in on some of the 49ers goal line packages and had a key tackle that kept Ray Rice out of the end zone on 2nd and goal at the 1-yard line on Thanksgiving.

The 49ers are likely going to let Reggie Smith walk in free agency, so it will be interesting to see if Spillman works his way into a more significant role as a safety. I think the 49ers still will look to add another safety as a depth option, but not much more. The reserve safeties this year included Smith, Spillman and Madieu Williams. Two of those three are likely to be elsewhere next year, so the 49ers potentially still add one more safety.
