Brian McIntyre, over at NFL.com, has managed to piece together the details of Andy Lee's contract extension courtesy of a source with knowledge of the deal. Initial reports on the deal had it set at six years and $20.5 million with $7.1 million coming in the first two years. The new contract fully guarantees the $1.1 million Lee was scheduled to earn in 2012.
The deal includes $25,000 in All-NFL team incentives for each season, including 2012. Since Lee was named All-NFL last season, it becomes a "Likely To Be Earned" incentive this coming season, but appears to be an "unlikely to be earned" incentive in future years based on the salary cap projections by McIntyre.
For this deal, Lee averages $3.4 million per year. This ranks third among NFL punters behind Raiders punter Shane Lechler ($4M) and Chargers punter Mike Scifres' ($3.625M). Lee obviously enjoys himself here and loves his coverage units, so he would seem to have taken a bit of a discount to stick around.
