Dashon Goldson Signs Franchise Tender

After an offseason of wondering what would happen with franchise player Dashon Goldson, we finally have an answer. The 49ers announced that the free safety signed his one-year franchise tender, which means he will report to camp with the rest of the veterans today. Although Goldson had inferred he wouldn't conduct any sort of training camp holdout, it remained up in the air until he signed the tender.

Although it would have been interesting to see C.J. Spillman and/or Trenton Robinson get some playing time with the first team defense, getting the entire starting defense together in camp is important. The defense is coming off a strong 2011 campaign and there is still room for growth in the pass defense. The 49ers can't work out any kind of long term deal with Goldson (if they are so inclined) until after the season, so thankfully that means the focus for both sides is on the 2012 season.

The 49ers veterans reported to camp today, and the team will conduct its first full roster practice tomorrow.
