The 49ers have their first day off from practice, although thankfully tweets would indicate many of them are going in to do some work today. Since the team has the day off, I thought it was as good a time as any to take a swing around the league to see what 49ers opponents are up to. If you're looking for general NFL news on a more regular basis, make sure and hit up SB Nation NFL. Also, in the coming weeks, fellow 49ers fan, The Football Girl, will be providing training camp round-ups most days.
I've got some info on a few teams, but feel free to link to any other news you think is of value about 49ers opponents.
Seahawks: The just recently breaking news has the 49ers division rival signing former 49ers wide receiver Braylon Edwards. The 49ers signed Edwards last year hoping he could become a big threat opposite Michael Crabtree, but injuries short-circuited his season and he was released. The Seahawks need some depth at receiver and if Edwards can stay healthy, he could do some good things for them. Of course, that's a big if.
Vikings: Running back Adrian Peterson apparently suffered a nasty allergic reaction to some shrimp in his jambalaya at training camp lunch. Maybe Randy Moss was on to something when he reportedly flipped out on the Vikings caterer!
Giants: The G-men suffered a tough blow as an MRI revealed projected starting cornerback Terrell Thomas suffered the third ACL tear of his career. He was projected across from Corey Webster, with Giants fans excited about his potential. Now, he faces a brutal road back as no NFL player has successfully come back from three ACL tears. Where this gets interesting is that it basically guarantees Prince Amukamara a huge role in the defense.
Dolphins: Although Miami got razzed a bit for their decision to draft Ryan Tannehill, the rookie QB is reportedly looking good thus far in camp. It's only been a couple days, so there is only so much value to this, but it's probably better than Tannehill stinking up the joint. The 49ers don't face the Dolphins until December 9, so we'll have a lot of time to figure out what to make of Tannehill's rookie season at that point. He's competing against Matt Moore and David Garrard, and I would be a bit surprised if he wasn't in the starting lineup by the time they face the 49ers.
Cardinals: Arizona released their first depth chart of training camp, and Kevin Kolb tops the QB charts. I don't really think there's much to do with that considering it's so early in camp and the Cardinals QB battle likely remains a significant question mark.
Packers: Tight end Jermichael Finley is dealing with a mild concussion he suffered late last week. He reportedly returned to practice today, so it would seem to be resolved. 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis will get to deal with the talented tight end in week one, in a matchup that will be a must-watch.
Lions: Running back Jahvid Best remains sidelined by the concussion he suffered against the 49ers. Lions GM Martin Mayhew says Best will be cleared "eventually" but the timing remains in question. I noticed somewhere on Twitter a Best quotation about how in years past he might have gotten back on the field already, but the change in the approach to concussions will keep him sidelined for an indefinite amount of time.
