Golden Nuggets: Backup QB Battle Heats Up, Harbaugh Tabs Kaepernick as Favorite

Hello everyone. It seems that all anyone wants to talk about is the QB depth chart. I'm in a bit of a rush so I'll skip all the formalities today and get straight to it. What do you think the depth chart should be? We've still got 3 preseason games to sort it all out. It's good to see Colin Kaepernick get some playing time after being on the bench for nearly every play last season. We know he's the future... but who would you rather have as the other guy (whether he beats out CK or not for #2)? Is it going to be Scott Tolzien or Josh Johnson? Coach Harbaugh clearly has some fondness for JJ or he would not have brought him in to compete. But Tolzien has looked great to date. It's one of the biggest question marks surrounding the team's roster....it's so nice to have such a solid roster that our biggest question mark is who the no 3 QB is. Gotta love it!

Matt Maiocco's mailbag deals with...you guessed it...the backup QB position. One reader asks if it's possible that we keep 4 QBs, others want his take on how the battle will play out. Click the link to find out! | The battles behind Alex Smith. (Maiocco)

After both Kaepernick and Tolzien impressed during the first preseason game, Josh Johnson came in 4th to do the mop-up duty. He knows he's got limited opportunities and hopes to shine. | Backup QB Johnson looks to impress. (Branch)

Coach Harbaugh has spoken! He says that, while nothing is set in stone, Colin Kaepernick has moved into the front running to be the backup QB. | Kaepernick emerges as no 2. (Maiocco)

Alex Smith was on fire out of the gate. The ball barely hit the ground in the first half of practice during the 7-on-7 drills. Colin Kaepernick hit Michael Crabtree for the offensive play of the day. It all seems to be coming together. | 49ers camp summary 8/14: Smith heats up, new depth chart. (Maiocco)

What did Eric Branch take from yesterday's practice? Offensive fireworks. Smith to Mannigham, Kaepernick to Crabtree, Kaepernick to Moss. Touchdowns galore at the expense of the second team DBs. This is what we were all hoping for from the offseason moves and it seems to be coming to fruition. | Smith to Manningham beauty signals the start of offensive fireworks. (Branch)

Mario Manningham looked good and consistent all day. Randy Moss caught 2 touchdowns over Carlos Rogers. These are among the many notes that Christian Gin has on offer. | Day 14 recap: Alex Smith impressive. (Gin)
