49ers Injury Report [Updated]: Aldon Smith Potentially Inactive Versus Broncos

Fooch's Update: Correction on Aldon Smith not traveling with the team. Cam Inman followed up on his initial report with a tweet indicating Smith made the trip and was out on the field. According to Inman, 49ers officials had indicated Smith had not traveled with the team. Matt Maiocco tweeted out that Smith was in game socks and cleats, but wasn't sure what his status was. We should expect updates on this shortly.

The 49ers will be without outside linebacker Aldon Smith today as he remains inactive with his hip injury. Smith was back at practice this week but did not travel with the team to Denver. With one preseason game remaining after today, it will be interesting to see if he gets any time on Thursday against the Chargers. While he has had practice to learn more about his full-time outside linebacker role, game time in the preseason would seem to be beneficial for the second year linebacker.

Inman reported as well that the starting outside linebackers for today's game will be Ahmad Brooks and Parys Haralson. That leaves Eric Bakhtiari in a backup role, although it remains to be seen how much time Demarcus Dobbs might get at nickel defensive end when the 49ers move to that formation. How Dobbs and Bakhtiari are used today could give us a good idea of what the 49ers have in mind for the two of them as they cut down to the 53-man roster.

NaVorro Bowman is apparently stretching with his left knee wrapped in a bandage, according to beat writer Cam Inman. He missed two practices this week, but there was never any official word as to what was up. We'll see how much playing time, if any, he gets today. Larry Grant would slot in after him, opposite Patrick Willis.
