The first quarter is rolling along and the 49ers opened things looking quite strong. The defense got a quick three and out to open things and the offense followed that up with a quick four play drive that netted a touchdown on an easy touchdown pass to Vernon Davis. Up 7-0, the 49ers look ready to roll.
Enter the refs, then enter special teams. After the 49ers touchdown, Chris Culliver was called for pass interference on a deep pass to Titus Young. Although the Lions were set-up on the 49ers side of the field, they could not take further advantage and settled for a field goal. After last week's physicality against Green Bay, we'll see how the 49ers handle potentially tighter officiating.
On the ensuing kickoff, Kendall Hunter fumbled, marking the first 49ers regular season turnover in 27 quarters. The Lions coverage unit kept Hunter on his feet and proceeded to strip him of the ball. The Lions could not get anything going and settled for another field goal.
The 49ers have gone back to the run game to close out the first quarter. We'll see when this eventually results in some play action against a weakened Lions secondary. Keep an eye out.
