Matt Maiocco just tweeted out that 49ers linebacker Clark Haggan has been suspended for three games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Haggans dealt with a DUI offense in 2011, serving 48 hours in jail and seven days of work release earlier this summer. Haggans will have to sit out the next three games against the Vikings, Jets and Bills. Although I'm surprised Haggans was suspended, this was a possibility when the 49ers first signed him.
This is not a particular big issue at this point as Haggans had sat out the first two games. He was active and dressed for both, but he got in on zero plays. I believe the 49ers will get a free roster spot, but I am not certain how it works with suspensions. The 49ers have generally avoided them in recent years, so I'll need to do some research on that. I suppose we could see Cam Johnson move back up to the roster, or the team could make a move with a free agent. Given that Aldon Smith played every snap last week and Ahmad Brooks was right behind him, we will not see a high impact move.
