The San Francisco 49ers wrapped up their roster business for the time being as they announced roster cuts on Friday and practice squad signings on Saturday. The roster could and probably will change at some point, but for now, we've got something to start with heading into the coming week. I've posted both after the jump, with the order of the positions based on the last depth chart the 49ers sent out earlier this week. We will have a new depth chart in a couple days.
The 49ers are fairly deep team, but they are facing some areas where they could be playing with fire. On the offensive line, the team kept four guards and two tackles. If Joe Staley or Anthony Davis went down during a game, Alex Boone could move to one of the tackle positions and Leonard Davis could move to right guard. If both Staley and Davis went down (unlikely, but obviously not impossible), I would imagine Boone moves to left tackle and Davis moves to tackle during that game. Davis has been a guard since 2007, but I imagine he could play some tackle if things got really ugly.
If the team were to lose either Staley or Davis for any starts, Kenny Wiggins would seem to be the first candidate to re-join the squad. Of course, the team could also look on the free agent market if it is going to be an extended absence.
On the defensive side of the ball, the team will head into the season with three outside linebackers once again. Demarcus Dobbs did get some time in a nickel defensive end role (Aldon Smith's role last year), so they could roll him out there if the situation calls for it. However, for now the team will be keeping its fingers crossed that Ahmad Brooks and Aldon Smith can stay healthy this season.
Finally, the safety position remains a questionable area. After Dashon Goldson and Donte Whitner, the team has C.J. Spillman, Trenton Robinson and Darcel McBath. The 49ers do not go to six defensive backs too frequently, and when they do, I suspect we'll see a lot of Perrish Cox. It will be interesting to see what kind of playing time Robinson and McBath get, and which or both is inactive on Sundays.
