College football is back with a couple of interesting ranked matchups, but otherwise a relatively low-key weekend. No. 6 Oklahoma hosts No. 15 Kansas State at 4:50pm PT on FOX, and No. 4 Florida State hosts No. 10 Clemson at 5:00pm PT on ABC. The big matchup for Bay Area fans features Cal traveling down to LA to face the No. 13 USC Trojans. It is safe to say USC will not be in a good mood coming off their upset loss to the Stanford Cardinal. I suppose Cal could hang close in this one, but it will be a tough one.
49ers scouts are confirmed at three games this weekend. They will be in North Carolina to catch East Carolina at North Carolina and Citadel at North Carolina State. That's quite the Carolina weekend. 49ers scouts will also be at the Syracuse-Minnesota contest. I would imagine some of those scouts hitched a ride with the 49ers up to Minneapolis today for Sunday's Week 3 contest against the Vikings. I wonder if that is at all a regular occurrence.
Last week I opened the floor for discussion about important positions the 49ers might need to consider int he 2013 NFL Draft. This week, I thought I'd see what people thought of as positions the 49ers will definitely not address next April.
Quarterback would seem to be off the board at this point given the combination of Alex Smith's continued development, and the youth behind him. Running back would seem to be filling up, even as Frank Gore gets a little older. If LaMichael James cannot even work his way off the inactive list, I would be a bit surprised to see them go running back in 2013. Well, at least not particularly early.
On the defensive side of the ball, outside linebacker might get some more late round love, but if the team can remain healthy at the position, I'm not sure we'll see them look too high. And of course, we know inside linebacker is just a little bit stacked.
After the jump, I've posted a rundown of some pertinent prospects for each of the 49ers college games, courtesy of Chris Steuber. I've also include Dan Rubenstein's weekly picks video, so give that a view when you get a minute. Dan knows his stuff.
