Vernon Davis is quietly a scoring machine

We take a look at Vernon Davis' streak of touchdowns and what his back injury could mean in the 49ers-Jets Week 4 matchup.

One of the quieter storylines developing through the first three weeks is Vernon Davis' continued prolific scoring streak. Through the first three weeks, Davis is tied for the NFL lead with three four receiving touchdowns. Add in the four touchdowns he grabbed in last year's playoffs and he is kinda sort of on fire with eight TDs in five games.

There has never been any doubt about Davis' athleticism, but his numbers have not blown up at the same level in part because he has often had to focus on blocking. He remains a stout blocker, but he is regaining his red zone touch. The 49ers brought in numerous other weapons, but Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree remain the primary threats in the passing game.

He now faces a Jets team that Football Outsiders ranks No. 19 defending against tight ends. Heading into the game he was a late addition to the injury report with a back issue. A couple weeks ago, during an interview on NBC with Bob Costas, Davis was asked about the missed dunk against Green Bay. He mentioned having a back issue that he thought he felt. Although Costas and Alex Smith laughed about it, it appears he was at least moderately serious about the back issue.

It would seem like it should not be too serious as he was a full participant this week, but it will be something to keep an eye on tomorrow.
