The 49ers released their final injury report yesterday evening, but with all the hubbub over the Giants and Cowboys season opener, I figured I'd wait until this morning to get the injury report posted. There isn't much in the way of crazy news, but the 49ers do have two pertinent players worth mentioning.
Running back Brandon Jacobs and WR/KR/PR Ted Ginn Jr. both sat out practice yesterday. Neither of these two pieces of information are at all shocking as both players were rather questionable heading into this week. Matt Maiocco reported that Ginn spent ten minutes on a stationary bike and Jacobs was wearing a brace on his knee. Both went to a side field to work with the team's strength and conditioning coach.
I would imagine both players will be listed as questionable when the final injury report comes out on Friday. I would also be willing to predict neither plays on Sunday. The 49ers seem happy with their depth at running back, wide receiver and the return positions. That of course means we get to see Kyle Williams returning punts and Kendall Hunter returning kicks. Both looked solid in those roles in the preseason, so let's hope it carries over to Sunday.
At running back, given the team's existing depth and decision to keep Anthony Dixon around, it strikes me as very reasonable to deactivate Brandon Jacobs this Sunday and let him really get back to 100%, hopefully in time for Week 2 versus the Lions.
