Michael Crabtree sexual assault investigation: No charges to be filed at this time

The San Francisco District Attorney has officially announced that charges will not be filed at this time against 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree. The police had been investigating Crabtree after he was on the receiving end of allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman. Technically the DA's office could file charges in the future, but it seems highly likely that this is behind Crabtree permanently.

Crabtree was involved in an investigation of sexual assault, and the accuser's story seemed to fall apart fairly quickly. The allegations arose following the 49ers win over the Packers, although it took several days for the woman to come forward. By the time word got out, the 49ers were off to Atlanta for the NFC title game. Crabtree had been questioned by police and had made himself available for further questioning. He was neither detained nor arrested during this process.

The reports that surfaced soon after indicated that Crabtree was in a hotel room and three woman were in the room with him. Two of the women backed up Crabtree's side of things, and the DA seems to have decided that is the case.

Thankfully, this wraps up before the 49ers get to New Orleans and the Super Bowl circus goes into overdrive. I'm sure he'll get some questions about it, but this removes a serious cloud that could have hung over his time with the media over the next week. We're all plenty happy with that.
