Super Bowl hotels 2013: Finding hidden "gems" amidst the overpriced nonsense

New, comments

While Super Bowl tickets are plenty expensive, the hidden cost people often forget is for hotel rooms. We take a look at some alternative websites that provide potentially reasonable deals for Super Bowl week.

The Super Bowl is fast approaching, which means people have either locked up their tickets and accommodations, or they are scrambling at the last minute to figure things out. I did not work on my plans until the weekend of the NFC title gam, so needless to say, I struggled finding a hotel room. In fact, I ended up not finding a hotel room, but rather found alternate arrangements.

There are hotel rooms available in and around New Orleans, but you are going to pay an arm and a leg for them. There are alternatives, however. You will pay decent money for them, but they are options.

The most basic is to look on the towns surrounding New Orleans. You'll find some hotels, but you'll pay extra to get a rental car. Not ideal, but it is one option.

What I ended up doing was going to AirBNB is a community marketplace for people to list, find and book accommodations all around the world. You can search through various locations at some fairly reasonable price points. Just to give you an idea of what I found, I will be staying in the Lower Garden District for $224 per night. It's obviously not cheap, and I'll be staying in somebody's house, so that is something to keep in mind. However, compared to the thousands I would be spending at some of the hotels, I think I can live with it.

For comparison's sake, you can currently spend $1,392.50 at the Holiday Inn in the French Quarter. That is per night NOT for an entire stay.

Some other websites worth checking out include HomeAway, VRBO and Couch Surfing.
