Super Bowl 2013: Putting together the 49ers roster

It has been 18 years since the 49ers won their last Super Bowl, and in that time the 49ers have dealt with plenty of turmoil. The 49ers dealt with problems up and down the organization, from ownership to the front office to the coaches to the players. And now, after 18 years in the desert, the 49ers are back and on the verge of reaching the mountain top.

I thought we could take a look at the 49ers roster and where everybody came from along the way. The current roster features 32 draft picks, 23 free agents, three players claimed off waivers and one player acquired through a trade. A team cannot build entirely through free agency, and the 49ers have generally done a solid job of finding the right parts to slot in around the strong base they developed through the draft.

The turn-around began with the hiring of Mike Nolan, although it was certainly in fits and starts. The only players to pre-date Nolan are Brian Jennings, Isaac Sopoaga and Andy Lee.

Things really took off once Trent Baalke took control of the front office after the 49ers parted ways with Scot McLoughan. The McNolan era laid some of the groundwork, but the front office maneuvering really picked up once Trent Baalke took the reigns.

And so, here are your 2013 San Francisco 49ers. Brian Jennings maintains his status as the longest-tenured. Nate Stupar was the most recent signee to the roster, joining the practice squad on January 8. Chad Hall was the most recent addition to the 53-man roster, getting a promotion from the practice squad on January 19, following the waiving of Billy Cundiff.
