Jets GM search: Tom Gamble selection could come as early as Tuesday [updated]

While the 49ers continue getting ready for the Green Bay Packers, there is still some non-playoff news of note. 49ers director of player personnel Tom Gamble has been making the rounds in an attempt to land a general manager position. It is possible we might find out his final destination as soon as Tuesday if the Jets have their way.

Over the last week, Gamble has interviewed with the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets, and reports have him potentially heading to San Diego and Cleveland for additional interviews. Gamble reportedly turned down a second interview with the Jaguars, in order to focus in on the Jets job. If that's the case, his potential interviews with the Chargers and Browns could simply be attempts to gain some leverage in contract negotiations.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan has apparently returned from the Bahamas and is set to have his end of year press conference on Tuesday. Some reports indicate the Jets might try and get something done with Gamble in order to prevent him from heading off for his remaining interviews. If that is the case, we might hear some Gamble news in a little bit. The end of year press conference is tentatively scheduled for 8:00 a.m. PT.

Fooch's Update: Things might be opening up a bit:

The Jets' interview with David Caldwell will take place in Jersey. Very possible he could wind having to choose b/w Jax and NYJ GM jobs.

Caldwell is believed to be the first Jets GM candidate to interview a second time. He and AZ's Steve Keim are the final two in Jax.
