Golden Nuggets: Quarterback Shuffle; Aldon Smith Faces Gun Charges

Thursday, October 10, 2013 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of 49ers links from around the web.

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

Now I'm really confused. Everyone made a lot of excuses as to why the 49ers would possibly want John Skelton over B.J. Daniels and people kept saying everyone was overreacting. I've been taking time away from Twitter and have been following the team a bit less lately (impending baby doom!). I should say I've been following what people are saying about the team less. My reaction is the same...it's confusion. I don't really care about QB3 as a position. If that person is ever playing for more than a half of football, we're doomed. I'd like to see a developmental prospect on our roster at some point, but it doesn't have to be now. I just wish someone could give me an explanation as to what in the heck has been happening. It makes no sense. Maybe we really wanted the scoop on how to beat the Cardinals from Skelton. Oh well.

The other major story is Aldon Smith being charged with 3 gun charges. He'll turn himself in later this month. We were afraid this might happen. He's building up a body of bad boy work that will surely land a hefty suspension from Mr Goodell. Hopefully he gets his head screwed on straight.

Quarterback Swapsies

Harbaugh stated that the team went with Skelton because of his experience. Then Skelton gets cut for McLeod Bethel-Thompson, aka McBLT, a man with no experience. | Goodbye John Skelton, hello McLeod Bethel-Thompson (again) (BASG)

Aldon Smith

There's really not much to read here. Just sad, and an audible sigh will escape your mouth. | Felony weapon charges brought against Aldon Smith (Inman)

Bill Williamson discusses the effect Aldon Smith's behavior and possible suspension / prison time is having on the team. | Aldon Smith charges create distraction (ESPN)

Oh, There's a Game

Cam Inman discusses the Cardinals offense and Carson Palmer's lack of production. The team has been less than explosive under their new signal caller. I read it in a non-related article (can't remember where), but Kevin Kolb's stats in his 5 games he played last year blow Palmer out of the water. I doubt Arizona's brass could have trotted out Kolb to the fanbase one more time. | Cardinals offense struggling to take flight under Palmer (Inman)

I was against the 49ers drafting Tyrann Mathieu at the position they would have been forced to take him at. Not because of his off the field issues, but because he has a French-y sounding last name. Seriously, I was worried he'd be the next Pacman Jones. He's showing he's got all the talent in the world so far this season. | 49ers to Face Rising Rookie Tyrann Matheiu (49ers.com)

And here's the practice reports for both teams as well as Matt Maiocco's Three and Out video. | 49ers injury report: McDonald, Smith out; Willis, Asomugha return (Maiocco)

Tramaine Brock

How good was Tramaine Brock last week? This good. | Brock named NFC defensive player of the week (Gin)

And the bigger question is whether or not Brock will return next year. Barrows looks at each of the 49ers cornerbacks, their play so far and their status beyond this year. Only Chris Culliver and Carlos Rogers are signed past this season, though Rogers' contract may make him a cap casualty. Perrish Cox can be brought back at our discretion. Has his play warranted it? | Tramaine Brock wins award, but will he be around next season? (Barrows)

Harbaugh Talks

I have no idea how this would work. The most secretive man in football being forced to have everything filmed and aired on television... | Jim Harbaugh wouldn't mind if the 49ers were featured on "Hard Knocks" (BASG)

Other Stuff (Football)

I'm shocked that there would actually be a debate over which quarterback you'd rather have, but I guess after Alex Smith's perfect start and a few bad games by Colin Kaepernick, this is what we get. | Smith over Kaepernick: Really? (ESPN)

The hottest trade rumor around has the Cleveland Browns trading the troubled Josh Gordon to the 49ers. Could it happen? Would the Browns part way with the uber-talented youngster? I doubt it. There's also footage of Michael Crabtree's rehab that I hadn't seen before embedded within. I frequently get asked on Twitter what's the latest on Crabtree. Click here. | Browns: No plan to trade Gordon (Maiocco)

Eric Branch questions just how effective Ray McDonald might be playing with a partially-torn biceps. We have to assume the staff will be keeping a close eye on the situation, both for his health and the good of the team. | DT McDonald can play with biceps tear, but how effectively? (Branch)
