49ers sign John Skelton: Impact on depth chart?

The 49ers announced the signing of QB John Skelton, the day after they the PR department released an updated depth chart. We break down the what the Skelton signing may or may not mean. New to Niners Nation? Sign up here and join the discussion!

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

Yesterday afternoon, the San Francisco 49ers made three roster moves, including the waiving of QB B.J. Daniels, and were rumored to be signing John Skelton. Well, the move is now official, as the 49ers announced they signed Skelton to a one-year deal. For those wondering, B.J. Daniels is going through the waiver system, and we should know at around 1 p.m. PT (give or take) if he has cleared waivers, or been claimed.

The 49ers released an updated depth chart on Tuesday, which does not reflect this addition, but does reflect the Jermaine Cunningham roster move. Skelton will likely slot in behind Colt McCoy for this first week.

At this point, the move has to reflect on Colt McCoy's potential as the backup. McCoy and Skelton are not the same kind of quarterback in terms of skill-set, but they're the same in terms of low upside, "safe" backup option. I don't see how it is possible both remain on the roster for the balance of the season.

My guess is they will now find themselves competing in practice. If one emerges as the clear winner, the other will be released. If B.J. Daniels clears waivers today and ends up on the practice squad, then maybe the 49ers eventually add him back to the 53-man roster. That is purely a guess on my part. After all, given that most of us were confused by the decision to waive Daniels, we don't really know what the front office is thinking. This is not a new revelation, but it does get reinforced with various roster moves.

How do you see the 49ers QB depth chart looking by the end of the season?
