San Francisco 49ers safety Donte Whitner has departed the game with a knee injury. He was replaced briefly by C.J. Spillman, returned and then left again before being ruled out by the 49ers. According to the media on hand, the injury did not appear to be too serious. Whitner was seen sitting on the bench with ice on his knee. We don't know exactly what it means, but it's certainly better than seeing him go to the locker room to get checked out.

The 49ers have been in control of this game throughout, so backups were expected at some point. Spillman spends most of his time on special teams, but the odds were good he would get in for Whitner at some point. This injury made the decision a lot easier. I imagine we'll see some more backups before the game is over as the Titans can get very little going on offense.

Once the 49ers wrap this game up, they will depart for London for their Week 8 contest with the winless Jacksonville Jaguars.
