Golden Nuggets: Eric Reid Is OK; Special Teams Success

Thursday, October 24, 2013 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of 49ers links from around the web.

Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

I'm going to take this edition of the Nuggets to talk about Eric Reid. Reid has been all that we could have hoped for and more in a free safety this season. He's still going to get better, but of all the options in the draft and the free agents, and after all the complaining some of us did over the move up to get him, it's looking as though Baalke made the right choice, both for now and the future. Reid is playing at a Pro-Bowl level, is an upgrade over Dashon Goldson and could blossom into one of the best safeties in the league for years to come. A glass of wine at dinner and solid play from rookies gets me emotional and worked up, if you couldn't tell....

Eric Reid OK, Other Injuries

During the Titans game, it looked as though Reid hurt himself twice. There was a play that ended with him holding his hand (it seemed as though he smacked it on a helmet) and the more serious ankle injury. Thankfully, he's OK, and will be patrolling the middle against the Jaguars. I'm expecting a big game from him as the Jags try to mount a comeback through the air after falling behind early. | 49ers practice report: Eric Reid not listed (Gin)

Both Reid and Donte Whitner were banged up but look to be fine. Matt Maiocco discusses this and has his Three & Out video embedded. | Reid, Whitner look fine, suit up for practice (Maiocco)

Not only are the safeties OK, rookie LB Nick Moody practiced for the first time since injuring his hand at the start of the season. | Notes: 49ers' starting safeties, sidelined rookie LB participate in practice (Branch)

Special Teams

BASG has a good piece about our rookie cornerback Darryl Morris. Losing Marcus Cooper to the Chiefs was a bit of a bummer, but Morris has been great on special teams and his blazing speed make him an equally intriguing prospect. | Darryl Morris lessens sting of losing Marcus Cooper (BASG)

Bill Williamson has the stats to prove how well the ST coverage units are playing this year. Kick returns are down 6.2 yards per and punt returns are down 4.8 yards per. WOW! | Coverage units continue to dominate (ESPN)
