Tuesday was a pretty big day for the 49ers. The NFL trade deadline passed with no movement by the 49ers, and the team activated defensive tackle Tank Carradine to the 53-man roster. The trade deadline is of note because the 49ers were unable to unload players on the back end of the roster that might otherwise be cut in the coming weeks.
Now that the trade deadline is out of the way, here is your full list of PUP, NFI and short term IR players.
PUP List: WR Michael Crabtree, WR Mario Manningham
NFI List: RB Marcus Lattimore, OT Luke Marquardt, LB Aldon Smith, CB Eric Wright
Short term injured reserve: Nick Moody
Marquardt and Lattimore are not expected to come off the NFI list and join the 53-man roster. They could join full practices for up to three weeks, but after that, they would likely be shelved the rest of the way.
That leaves the 49ers with five impending roster moves to consider. Here are some timetables of note:
1. Manningham and Wright have to be activated by next week. The 21 day practice clock ends next Tuesday.
2. There is no specific return date for Aldon Smith, and I believe the 49ers would need to speak with the commissioner to get that all cleared up. The team is reportedly going to meet with Aldon (and I assume his rehab people) during the bye to assess his progress.
3. Michael Crabtree can begin practicing at any point, and then would have the same 21 day window to get activated. We'll continue to keep an eye out for the start of that 21-day window.
4. Nick Moody is back at practice and the 49ers can activate him as soon as next Wednesday.
The 49ers decided to retain their three current reserve defensive linemen when they activated Tank. As we discussed yesterday, it actually makes sense to go extra deep on the line given the injury concerns for the starting trio. They could very well release a defensive tackle when it comes time to activate Michael Crabtree down the line, but we'll have to wait and see on that.
The list of bubble players includes a few obvious names. I'd say right now, the bubble list would be:
CB Nnamdi Asomugha
WR Jon Baldwin
DT Demarcus Dobbs
DT Tony Jerod-Eddie
WR Marlon Moore
LB Nate Stupar (but not quite as bubble as the rest)
WR Kyle Williams
Another option is to move rookie WR Quinton Patton to injured reserve. I think the team will hold off on that for now, but it is one more roster move at their disposal.
