In news that should surprise nobody, 49ers cornerback Tramaine Brock was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 5. Brock had two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown, and added a pair of pass deflections. According to Pro Football Focus, Brock gave up two receptions on four targets for 32 yards.
Brock has now made two consecutive starts as the 49ers nickel back, and he is adjusting quite well to the role. Nnamdi Asomugha was not targeted that much when he was in the role, but when he was targeted, he was inconsistent in his performance. Asomugha's knee injury opened the door for Brock to move into the lineup, and he seems to have no plans on giving up the job. Jim Harbaugh is a fan of the "hot hand", and at this point, nobody is hotter than Tramaine Brock.
This Sunday, the 49ers will host an Arizona Cardinals squad that is struggling for consistency on offense. That being said, they have a potentially formidable trio of receivers in Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd and Andre Roberts. Seven of their ten most frequently used lineup combinations involve all three receivers on the field. It is safe to say Tramaine Brock will see plenty of action on Sunday.
