Aldon Smith reportedly to face three felony charges of possession of assault weapons

When it rains, it pours. As Aldon Smith continues his rehab at an undisclosed facility, it now appears he will face multiple gun possession charges related to the 2012 party in which he was stabbed. NBC Bay Area is reporting a source indicated the Santa Clara District Attorney has filed three felony charges of possession of assault weapons.

While significant news, it is worth noting this issue first came to our attention a month ago. The issue at this point is one of specific intent, and whether Aldon knew or should have reasonably known that the guns in question were illegal. We don't know yet what the specific charges will be. It could be for simple possession of the weapons, but given that he reportedly bought the guns in Arizona, transport of the weapons could raise issues as well.

We'll keep an eye on this as this obviously has significant implications for Smith once he returns from his rehab program. This is still incredibly preliminary in nature.
