The San Francisco 49ers have lost rookie safety Eric Reid to a head injury in the third quarter of their Week 10 matchup with the Carolina Panthers. Reid went to make a tackle on running back Mike Tolbert, but the contact sent him spinning off and down. It remains to be seen how the crown of the helmet rule applies, but for now, Reid has gone to the locker room. He is currently being evaluated for a concussion.
The second string free safety is Craig Dahl. C.J. Spillman has been discussed here and there, but he generally spends more time at strong safety. Well, he spends time there in the preseason, at least.
Eric Reid suffered a concussion in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks. He cleared the concussion protocol that week and played against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 3. If this turns out to be a concussion, we'll have to wait and see what the protocol dictates for a second concussion in the season.
