The San Francisco 49ers lost a brutal one on Sunday, dropping a 10-9 decision to the Carolina Panthers. Naturally, that means a drop in the Week 11 NFL power rankings. The team slid three to four spots across the board, while the Panthers find themselves getting the "they're a contender" treatment. The Panthers have two fairly huge games left with the New Orleans Saints, which should make for an interesting finish in the NFC South.
Speaking of the Saints, the 49ers travel to New Orleans this Sunday in what is turning into a fairly frequent affair. The 49ers and Saints have played three of the last four years, including the epic divisional round matchup at Candlestick park in 2012. The 49ers followed that up with a win in New Orleans last season, but that Saints team was a different one than the one facing the 49ers in Week 11. They've made some improvements on defense, but more importantly it seems, they have Sean Payton back in the house.
And so, the 49ers head off looking for another win against a .500 opponent. The 49ers beat the Green Bay Packers to open the season, and they beat a then 3-2 and now 5-4 Arizona Cardinals in Week 6. Speaking of the Cardinals, there is a lot of football left between now and Week 17, but that Week 17 contest in Arizona looks at least a little bit interesting. The 49ers are likely to be battling for something at that point, whether it be the division title or a wildcard spot. Who knows where the Cardinals will be at that point. For now, they're looking scrappy.
