The San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints released their final injury reports, and we have some necessary clarification on some pertinent injuries.
The 49ers will definitely be without the services of defensive tackle Ray McDonald and wide receiver Quinton Patton, as both were ruled "Out" for Sunday's game. Tight end Garrett Celek has been ruled "Doubtful" for the game. And for those hoping to see Michael Crabtree, 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said it was unlikely. Crabtree is not yet on the 53-man roster, which means he is not included in the injury report.
The absence of McDonald means Tony Jerod-Eddie and Demarcus Dobbs will be tasked with replacing him. Tank Carradine could find himself in the mix as well, but the discussion has focused on Jerod-Eddie and Dobbs thus far. It sounds like Jerod-Eddie will get the start, and Dobbs will rotate in fairly frequently.
Garrett Celek's "Doubtful" status means the odds are pretty long for him to play. Technically he was a 25 percent or less chance, but Doubtful players rarely see the field. If that is the case, the team could either go a man short, or add a player from the practice squad or free agency. Practice squad tight end Derek Carrier is the likely candidate for promotion. If it does happen, it has to be before 1 p.m. PT Saturday afternoon. The 49ers currently have 52 players on the roster, so they still have a spot for one more player.
Vernon Davis and Eric Reid are both listed as questionable due to their concussions. They continued with "limited" participation in practice, going through non-contact work. If they clear light contact drills (I believe that will happen tomorrow), they should be able to play. Symptoms can still return so we're likely to not know their status with 100 percent certainty until Sunday.
On the Saints side of things, rookie safety Kenny Vaccaro has officially been ruled out. It's not a surprise, but it is final confirmation.
