We're back with more 49ers slip-sliding in NFL power rankings following a brutal loss. The 49ers lost 23-20 to the Saints, and while they continue to slide down power rankings, it is fairly limited. The 49ers losses have come to quality opponents, which can be viewed in one of two ways. The first is, they've played close with two quality opponents, come up just short, but are at least showing they can hang with good teams. The other view is that they can't figure out how to beat good teams at this point, and need to show something soon. Or maybe it's some combination of both, I don't know.
The Hilton released some updated Super Bowl odds yesterday before the Panthers game, and the 49ers still had the fifth lowest odds to win the Super Bowl. Even if the Panthers move ahead of them, this still shows there is some level of respect out there. I view it as people seeing the 49ers talent, and figuring they can potentially turn things around and get hot when it matters.
And given where the 49ers sit, that's all that really matters: getting to the playoffs and getting hot at that point. The 49ers need to first figure out how to win some games, but as we've seen in recent years, it's all about getting hot in January. Or maybe that's just what we'll sell ourselves on until the 49ers figure something out on offense.
