WWE, 49ers announce Wrestlemania 31 headed to Santa Clara

After word leaked over the weekend, the WWE and the San Francisco 49ers announced Wrestlemania 31 is coming to the South Bay.

The San Francisco 49ers and World Wrestling Entertainment held a press conference Tuesday afternoon to announce that Wrestlemania 31 will be coming to Levi's Stadium in 2015. Word of this leaked over the weekend, as the Bay Area had been a finalist alongside Philadelphia.

The Santa Clara Convention & Visitor's Bureau put together a gallery of photos from the press conference. The event itself will take place March 29, 2015. The week of Wrestlemania includes a variety of events, much like we see with the Super Bowl. They will all take place in the surrounding area:

  • WrestleMania Axxess  WWE¹s four-day interactive fan festival at the San Jose Convention Center;
  • the 2015 WWE Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at SAP Center;
  • Monday Night Raw® at SAP Center;
  • Be a STAR anti-bullying rallies, hospital visits and other pro-social activities designed to give back to the host community.

Vernon Davis and Alex Boone were on hand for the press conference, and that led to some amusing stuff on social media. Here's a shot of Vernon with the WWE Championship belt:

Jed York posted this picture with the belt as well:

If the 49ers win the Super Bowl, I assume Jed York will be doing the Vince McMahon power walk at NFL owner meetings, and at the kickoff to next season. Right?

Mr

The awarding of Wrestlemania to the Bay Area has brought up some easy jokes. The most obvious is whether or not we'll see Jim Harbaugh and Pete Carroll take part in a retirement match. And of course, you know Richard Sherman has to be involved with a steel chair. Any other great storylines you can think of that will boost the ratings for Wrestlemania?
