One of the biggest question marks this offseason is pretty simple: what's to happen with quarterback Alex Smith? Personally, I'm still a bit torn up on how things went with Smith. I think we went on a QB roller coaster ride that few players have ever really been on and I have a soft spot for him because of it.
That being said, the money he'll be making is better-served elsewhere in my opinion. I'd love to be able to get someone like Percy Harvin and give him the contract he wants, or finally give Dashon Goldson the, you know, second contract of his career at 28 years old.
He has to go somewhere, and I do believe that the 49ers would be fine with carrying him on the roster, and on top of that, I do believe that other teams believe that. So some team will likely have to make a trade for him.
But are the 49ers ruling out the Arizona Cardinals, a quarterback needy team, from the get-go? There's no reliable rumors of such at this point, but it wouldn't surprise me if Jim Harbaugh didn't want to see Smith go to an NFC West rival. I legitimately believe Harbaugh is a fan of Smith and would be happy with him as his quarterback if not for Colin Kaepernick.
So there's other options, like the New York Jets or the Kansas City Chiefs. But I wanted to really focus on the Cardinals.
Personally, I'd hate to see Smith go to Arizona. I think he's the kind of quarterback who could make our defense look bad with consistent, accurate throws and prolonged drives. The win the NFC West, you generally need to beat the NFC West, and I think Smith would be plenty motivated to beat the 49ers.
Plus, who wants to see him in a gross Cardinals uniform? Yuck.
At any rate, let's close out the day with a sound-off. How do you feel about Smith to Arizona? Do you hate the idea, are you indifferent to the idea, or do you think he's not all that and a bag of potato chips and you'd like to stomp him to the ground twice a year? Let's hear it.
