Golden Nuggets: Ted Ginn a goner? Joe Looney to make leap?

Thursday, February 21, 2013 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of 49ers links from around the web.

Does anyone care about the combine? I, for one, don't. It's not that I'm evil. I'm just not as crazy about the pre-draft buildup as the next guy. We're going to see some freaks of nature sneak up the chart. We'll see some skill position players slide a round based on their slower than expected 40 time. And we'll see the best talent avoid doing anything that might give you an idea of where they're at. So I'm still focusing on Alex Smith, Dashon Goldson and all of our other personnel decisions. They're the ones who will be playing next year. We definitely need some added depth, but with our mountain of picks to maneuver with, we really don't know where we'll be picking in any round.

I think we all know the answer to this question. BASG asks, in his series on 49ers free agents, what the team should do with Ted Ginn. He runs bad routes, lost his value as a return man and his dad is dissing the team. I think he'll be gone. Who will give him the minimum to return kicks next year? Who cares? | Should he stay or should he go: Ted Ginn (BASG)

Our biggest miss in the last five years was Kentwan Balmer. At the 29th pick in 2009, we could have had Matt Forte, DeSean Jackson, Ray Rice, Jamaal Charles, Thomas DeCoud or a list of other Pro Bowlers. Every team in the league could have had those guys. Shows how inexact the science is. | Draft rewind: 49ers' five-year recap (Sando)

Remember how Alex Boone took over the right guard position when nearly every single one of us though we needed help at the position? I do. He played great last season, garnering postseason accolades. Joe Looney may be earmarked for a similar surprise unveiling. What if the 49ers cut Jonathan Goodwin for cap reasons as some have speculated? | Looney may pay delayed dividends for Niners (NBC)

Matt Maiocco writes that the 49ers shouldn't be reluctant to trade Alex Smith within the division. There's only one team that could mean, Arizona. It would keep Larry Fitzgerald happy while the Cardinals could groom their future franchise QB. They may be the team that makes the most sense. | 49ers shouldn't be reluctant to trade Alex Smith within the division (Maiocco)

It's great to revisit a draft gurus analysis of your favorite player once they've made it big. Mike Mayock had the following to say about our young signal caller. | Mayock on Kaepernick in '11: "Big arm, wildly inconsistent, great athlete" (Branch)
