NFL Combine 2013: Quarterbacks provide height, weight, hand size results

Quarterback is the one position where the 49ers are virtually a lock to not select anybody early in the draft. If they part ways with Alex Smith before the draft, they will need to find somebody to compete with Scott Tolzien behind Colin Kaepernick.

The 49ers could decide to go the route of the Redskins, who added Kirk Cousins in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft, even after drafting Robert Griffin III in the first round. There is a certain value to stockpiling assets, but for the 49ers, I think they would be more likely to deal away picks than add a quarterback with anything higher than a sixth round pick.

This year's QB class is particularly weak, with many talent evaluators arguing there are no first round-caliber quarterbacks. That will not stop someone from reaching for a quarterback early, but we can view that as a good thing for the 49ers. Every quarterback that is overdrafted in the first round drops talented players that much further down the draft board.
