49ers OL Al Netter arrested for DUI

The San Francisco 49ers had what will hopefully be their only arrest of the offseason as offensive lineman Al Netter was arrested for driving under the influence. Netter was reportedly arrested by San Jose CHP on Wednesday for having a BAC above the .08 legal limit. The 49ers released a statement regarding Netter:

"The 49ers are aware of the recent matter involving Al Netter. We take these issues very seriously, but will reserve comment at this time as this is an ongoing legal matter. The organization will continue to gather the facts and monitor the developments closely."

Netter spent the season on the practice squad and was signed to a reserve/future contract after the Super Bowl.

I don't expect the 49ers to release Netter, but this is not the kind of attention a potential fringe player wants to get. It is not fair, but oftentimes in the NFL not all arrests are equal. Often times a superstar or other significant player will get multiple chances when they get in trouble with the law. On the other hand, a player battling to just make a roster might not get that extra chance. If Netter makes it to the final cuts and it's down to him and another player who are essentially equal, this could prove to be a tie-breaker.

Who knows if that will even come to fruition during position battles, but it is something to keep in mind when late August rolls around.
