Golden Nuggets: Alex Smith trade in place?

Monday, February 25, 2013 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of 49ers links from around the web.

There was one, and only one, story that captivated everyone's attention yesterday, and that was the rumor that a trade for Alex Smith had been worked out with an unnamed team. Rumors are flying that the second team is the Chiefs. What we might expect to get for Mr Smith is still up for debate and there is the very real possibility that we won't find out anything else about the situation until the league year begins on March 12. Oh, the drama. Oh, the intrigue. I can't wait.

Recent drafts have shown that quality quarterbacks can be had in any round, and I would assume the Chiefs, if they are in fact the second team, are hoping that Alex can do for their QB of the future what he did with Colin Kaepernick. Keeping the seat warm while mentoring a future starter can keep you in work in this league for a long time.

BASG leads off the speculation. There's not much more than that going on at this point. Thusly, there isn't much for me to say, other than the Chiefs seem to be the team tabbed by most as the dance partner of choice. | 49ers reportedly have a deal in place to trade Alex Smith (BASG)

Next on BASG's hit list for unrestricted free agents is Larry Grant. Another guy I'd like to keep around, if the price is right. You never know what the player wants out of a new contract. One would assume that Grant wants the chance to start, and it's realistically not going to happen for him in San Francisco. | Should he stay or should he go: Larry Grant (BASG)
