The 2013 NFL Combine wraps up on Tuesday with defensive backs going through workouts and drills. People will be paying attention to 40-times, but the speed turn drill will give us a little more insight into their coverage abilities. It won't replace game tape, but the drill gives us a chance to see a little bit of what they can do.
The players start in back pedal, then break toward the quarterback when the position coach gives a signal. At the next signal, the defensive back turns and runs down the sideline with his eyes back at the quarterback, as if covering a wide receiver in man-to-man coverage. About 20 yards downfield, the quarterback fires a pass for the defensive back to turn and make a play. Scouts will look for quickness and fluidity, and of course see how they are able to look back to the pass.
