Darrelle Revis trade rumors: 49ers reportedly not expected to pursue

The latest info on the 49ers pursuit (or lack thereof) of Darrelle Revis

Chris McGrath

Since news broke of the 49ers and Chiefs agreeing on a deal to send Alex Smith to Kansas City in exchange for draft picks (reportedly a 2nd in 2013, conditional 2nd in 2014), the idea of trading for Jets star corner back Darrelle Revis has picked up steam. San Francisco would have plenty of ammo in draft picks to acquire the shut-down corner should they so desire. In fact, Jason Cole of Yahoo! reported that a source felt the 49ers would indeed pursue Revis.

Today however Adam Schefter tweeted that Chris Mortensen had a source conflicting that report, instead saying that the 49ers were not expected to pursue a trade for Revis. That tweet is below.

This is the time of year where the rumor mill is really cranking up, with the draft just 56 days away and free agency about to start in less than two weeks. You'll all remember when the 49ers were in the Nnamdi Asomugah sweepstakes two years ago and again last year with Peyton Manning. Neither of those items panned out, but it's always fun to ride the roller-coaster of "reports".

Personally I would tend to agree with Mort that this doesn't fit the 49ers approach to building a team. They pay their own, don't make blockbuster moves, and don't engage in bidding wars. Most people citing some sort of "precedent" are going way back, to the Deion Sanders signing, for instance, which was nearly 20 years ago.

We'll keep following this story, though, and keep you up-to-date on the latest.
