The coaching carousel continues to move along as various teams are trying to fill out their coordinator and other assistant positions. The 49ers have managed to hang on to their coaching staff through this tumultuous offseason, but a former 49ers coach is in the news now. Apparently, former 49ers head coach and linebackers coach Mike Singletary interview for the St. Louis Rams defensive coordinator job.
The Rams spoke with Rob Ryan and Dick Jauron previously, and their search continues for the right man. Singletary is an interesting option considering he has never been a coordinator before. That was brought up when he was promoted to head coach of the 49ers, but in the excitement of his late season run as interim head coach, it was quickly overlooked. Who knows if working as a coordinator would have made a difference for his head coach prospects.
Mike Singletary was a very smart football player, but as a coach, he did not strike me as the greatest of Xs and Os guys. He knows defensive football, so maybe he'll find his way as a defensive coordinator. It is hard to really make any sort of assessment at this point. The Rams have not hired Singletary at this point, but obviously he is on the radar. Even though the 49ers are pretty far removed from the Mike Singletary era, it would still make for an interesting story twice a season if he did end up in St. Louis.
